More Tests, Vitamin C, Coffee, Salt, Butter, Sugar

Got the results of my tests yesterday, and the ones for the thyroid are really bad!  I sent an email to Dr. Sivieri telling him that I wanted to discuss them over the phone. He had not received the fax that they had told me had been sent from Dr. Pennington’s office, so we sent him another fax (it’s always good to have a fax machine at home in cases like this one, and others).

He called me from his car (I chided him for doing it, but he wanted to talk to me and that was the only time he had).  I am on a new supplement that is extra good:  Bio EnRGy C, a high potency Vitamin C powder that also has Ribose, supposedly an excellent addition. We’ll see. I have to wait 10 days and call him back.

It is a thyroid problem, but there is also adrenal dysfunction. They generally go together, unfortunately…

Ramon brought us food, and he also found gluten free waffles at Trader Joe’s. Guido tried them ad said they were the best thing so far! When he was at Balducci’s yesterday he went to the waffle section to see if they had them — and they did!  Now we need not worry.  The fette from the store in Spain has not arrived yet, even though they said it was sent express, thus the sky high cost. By the time they get here, Guido will be done with the gluten free diet.

Now, don’t start asking. The tests he had before going on the diet are still in the labs (very singular ones that Dr. Hedaya specified).  He has to have those same tests at the end of the diet – one month – and it will take another month to get the results. This means we will not know if he has to resume the diet, for how long, or not at all.  He is getting a bit upset too, not being able to eat pizza, good bread, pasta…  He used to have ginger tea in the morning, but now even the MDVIP doctors are telling patients to drink coffee (and even in Facebook!). Now he makes a double espresso in the morning and adds heated milk. (I had to teach him how to use the machine, as I use it every morning, and he helps, but it’s different when you have to do it yourself). He succeeded – and loved it! Of course, we use only the best — ILLY!

What else is new?  I was reminded of Shakespeare’s King Lear. The latest studies reveal “National policies that advise restricting sodium (salt) intake to reduce the risk of hypertension might not provide the anticipated cardiovascular benefits and may even be detrimental to health, report researchers in an article (and many others too): http://averaorg.adam.com/content.aspx?productId=16&pid=16&gid=44632
Now they also say table salt is bad. I knew that, and I rememeber having written about it. Look at the list of ingredients. There is something they add to make it flow!  Get Celtic or Sea salt. It is pure and has iodine, but it is not added! And beware of refined salt.

What next, I ask?  Years ago, my doctor gave me two lists of things that were good or bad for the health. Under the “NO” column, olive oil was listed first!  Then they told people to eat margarine, not butter. Wrong!  And all those sugar replacements?  Wrong again. Sugar – pure cane sugar – is the best.

They are poisoning us.  You have to spend so much time reading the list of ingredients that it’s ridiculous. And many products still list hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil as an ingredient.  Even when I order through the Internet I go over the list of ingredients carefully.

When you are sick as I am, you try to be even more careful than normally so as not to aggravate you condition.  As I learn about these issues, I pass them on to those who care to read these ramblings.  But they also serve another purpose – they remind me about all this!

And poor Guido gets worried, and I get frustrated because he has to do so many things he had never done before – and he is still not well.  At least, he can go out.  Yesterday his colleagues form the University of Maryland asked him to help them review students’ architecture projects. He went willingly, and was very happy –all afternoon!   If he could, he’d go back to teaching, and they want him to.  In my case … I’d better not say anything…

Are people afraid that what I have is catching?  E-mails and phone calls do not carry germs… I managed to got out in the sun yesterday – for five minutes. Today I am totally and completely out of it, weak, wobbly, sad.  The phone did not ring even once!  And when it does it is always the same friends who know how to comfort me. And we talk forever! It helps so much and it makes me talk, something I don’t do much – only with Guido, but that is not enough.

Oh, well. I’d better stop as it is getting late… and I am sure I have put some of you to sleep!  Too bad 😉

About martisima

After over 50 years of teaching literature to undergraduate and graduate students, I feel I have earned my retirement (it happened when I was 72, five years ago). I do miss the classroom, however, but not the meetings and all other requirements of the profession. I love teaching, and wish I could still do it. But now I read for pleasure, and watch films, and listen to all kinds of music (no TV, though). I love to travel, and hope I can resume doing it soon. I need to get over my health issues caused by thyroid surgery three years ago!

  1. Of course you haven’t put anyone to sleep!

It is crazy how so many things once thought good for us are now not and vice versa. The best thing is to eat as much fresh, unprocessed food as possible.

So apart from the supplement, what do they need to do now with your thyroid medication?

Nothing for now. Just wait and see what the vitamin C does. Then we’ll discuss it, and maybe go to T3 only. Waiting — the order of the day!

I’m sorry to say this, Martha, but I get the idea that you kind of created a ‘two tier’ system of friend-helpers–those whom you ceaselessly praise, who always do the right thing, bring (or send) the right food, etc. etc. And all the others.

It looks as if the ‘same friends’ who know how to ‘comfort you’ are of your own careful choosing, culled from your pool of friends. All the rest (myself among them), who offered to help, have seemingly dropped out of sight. And now you’re scanning the landscape for a glimpse of them, or waiting for the phone to ring.

I’m reminded of that scene in ‘Casablanca,’ when Louie Renault says to Bogie’s Rick, ‘Throwing away women like that, Ricky? Some day they may be scarce.”

Well, anyway, I continue to hope that you and Guido find your way back to good health, and more fully lived lives. And I’m happy that Guido has felt well enough to go out to UMD.

I leave for the UK on the 16th, for a month.

    Ciao,

I don’t agree with your assessment, Pat. Some friends have been doing things for us on their own, without being asked, and they don’t offer. They do it because they know me, and when anyone asks if they can do something or if I need something, they know I will always tell them not to bother, that we are fine.

Those friends have chosen me, not the other way around.

Lucky you that you can get away for a month. Have a great time!

      martha
