Here we are, after Guido’s cataract surgery back on Tuesday. The second eye was a bit worse because the pupil had become smaller. and there is a veil now covering that eye. According to the surgeon, it will eventually go away as the pupil returns to its normal size … we hope! Other than that, he is doing fine. He had to get one of those glasses they sell at the drugstore for reading. It will be great for him to be able to see from afar!!!
Friends have been kind, and we welcome the messages, calls, and cards (although there were fewer this time). But those were even more appreciated!!!

I am starting a different subject. I state it because I notice that when I do it without warning, many do not seem to realize there is something else and don’t pay any attention. Yes, there is more!
The house in San Rafael does NOT need an elevator, as some have recommended… (yes)… If you look at the entrance (again), you’ll see that it is flush with the street level. This is the entrance to the top two floors, where we shall dwell. Valerie has the lower one, but you can only see it from the back, as the house is on a slope, as most in that area. Then, even below that, is the studio apartment. Therefore, we are not reckless or foolish for having bought it (as was intimated by couple of people out there…) Where we are now there are three sets of steps, and they do not trouble us when we go up and down several times a day, even though I am not well enough to do it even more! On the contrary, they provide some needed exercise as we go up and down with no problem. Thanks for the recommendation, but we are not planning on getting an airlift, please. At least, not yet!

Back of the house– our unit consists of the two top floors; Valeria and Creg have the lower one, and the lowest is the studio. The garage is on the right, with a lower floor for storage.
Rosana has already left, and we are once again all by ourselves. I don’t mind now, as I know it will soon be over. Both Rosana and Valeria are “old timers” in the Bay area. They have lived there for about 28 years, and are very well informed about everything. In addition, Valeria took a course and she is a volunteer through it – NERT – neighborhood emergency response team. She knows exactly what to do in the event of an earthquake! Valeria and Creg have many friends and like to have them over. We’ll be surrounded by young people! I know most of them through Facebook, so they will not be strangers. She will be coming back here when we are ready to move in order to help us. And it IS getting closer – I started this message 20 minutes ago, and it is now later, and soon it will be tomorrow, and then it is April……

Good evening Martha 🙂 I’m glad things went well for Guido, even though the 2nd eye wasn’t as good as the first 😦 I’m sorry I didn’t contact you sooner about how things went, but I’ve been wallowing in my own misery this week 😦
When I first saw the pic of your new home — rearview — I marvelled that you would be able to manage all those stairs — I couldn’t! It was a relief to see the front view 🙂 It is such a cute house where I know you’ll be comfy.
I am betting that you will feel so much better, all ways round, when you get moved & living so close to your daughters. You’re already sounding more upbeat 🙂

You are very special, dear Dotty, and you know how to cheer me up. Maybe you understand me better because you too are not that well, and that helps to empathize with others who are sick too!
I think that many didn’t realize that the house goes “down” in the back quite a lot. We would never have been able to manage all those stairs, but one flight is not that bad for us now.
I am more upbeat because it is almost April, then comes May, and June is next waiting for us to go West!!!
Happy Easter to you too. The weather has been somewhat better, but the sun is still not ready to come out and stay out all day 😉

Dear Martha, thanks very much for your latest post. It was good to know that Guido’s cataract surgery went well and is now behind him, and that preparations for your move to San Francisco are progressing well. Thanks also for your address there, and the pictures of the house front and rear. It seems to me that this house was an ideal purchase–you and Guido will have one of your dear daughters in the same structure, and perhaps also an income supplement from that studio-level apartment. We had a small-scale but joyous Easter yesterday in spite of the dreary weather, though I must say it was wonderful to see the sun again today! Our forsythia is in bloom now, and the lilacs and azalea won’t be far behind. I still enjoy gardening (though I don’t have the strength to do as much as I used to!), and look forward to that in the days and weeks ahead. Love and best wishes, Esther

Indeed, it will be wonderful to have Valeria and Creg live with us – but separately. We never intended that studio as an income supplement at all. We are reserving it for all the friends who want to visit us!
And Valeria loves gardening, so we’ll have an in house gardener, as well as cook, and helper!
The weather did nothing for us, as we don’t celebrate Easter (or any other holidays), and we are by ourselves. This will definitely change in the future, for sure!!!!!!!!
